The manufacture of prototype tools enables customers to produce prototypes and also serves as a learning tool. Prototype tools are also known as soft or rapid tooling, as the tools are not made of high-strength steel like their successors and therefore wear out slightly faster. Due to the cheaper and softer material, prototype tools are not only significantly cheaper than tools for series production in terms of material price but also in terms of processing, and therefore do not require large investments in the early stages of development. The advantage is that inexpensive tools can be used to test both the production process and the part itself. A decision is then made as to whether the part can go into mass production and whether a series tool should be ordered.
